Distinguished and Famous people from Mount Eliza
📐 Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin
Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin helped shape Mount Eliza through their work on the Ranelagh Estate, in association with surveyor Saxil Tuxen. Developed as a subdivision in the 1920s, Ranelagh used curving roads, reserves, communal facilities and spacious traffic islands to create a distinctive garden suburb. The Griffins’ connection is professional: their planning helped determine how this part of Mount Eliza would look and feel. It is a useful reminder that a notable person’s local legacy can be something people travel through every day. Here the drawing board left its signature in the streets, rather than on a gallery wall.
✈️ Reg Ansett
Aviator and businessman Reg Ansett lived at Gunyong Valley in Mount Eliza, commuting to his Melbourne office by helicopter. It was an appropriately airborne solution to the daily journey for the founder of an airline. Away from the office, he bred and raced thoroughbreds and became a foundation member and sometime chairman of the Mornington Racing Club. He died at Mount Eliza in 1981. His will included bequests to the racing club, Peninsula Church of England School and Toorak College, as well as support for other charities. His connection with the area extended across home life, racing and philanthropy.
📐 Guilford Bell
Guilford Bell and Neil Clerehan designed Simon House at Mount Eliza in 1963, a collaboration awarded the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects’ single house medal the following year. Both architects valued privacy and restrained modern design, but their partnership proved short-lived and ended in 1964. Bell’s later houses continued to use formal arrangements, walls and courtyards to control the movement from entrance to living space and view. Mount Eliza’s connection is the completed house and its joint authorship: an award-winning building emerged even from a partnership whose designers ultimately preferred to work apart.
